Costa Rica has two international airports, and which one you fly into quietly shapes your whole trip — how far you drive on day one, how much your flights cost, and whether you spend a day backtracking across the country.
Most people just book into San José because it's the one they've heard of. Sometimes that's right. Often it isn't. Here's how we'd choose, based on where you're actually going.
The two airports, plainly
San José (airport code SJO, officially Juan Santamaría) sits in the central highlands, near the capital. It has the most international flights and usually the lowest fares, and it's the best-connected base for reaching most of the country — the Caribbean, Tortuguero, the cloud forests, the central and southern Pacific.
Liberia (code LIR, officially Daniel Oduber) sits up in the northwest, in Guanacaste. It's smaller, with fewer flights that often cost a bit more — but if your trip is the northern Pacific beaches, it puts you there in an hour or so instead of a long haul from the capital.
Choose by where you're going
The honest rule of thumb: fly into the airport closest to where you'll spend the most time, and don't overthink the rest.
- Guanacaste / northern Pacific beaches (Tamarindo, Papagayo, Nosara, Rincón de la Vieja) → Liberia (LIR), hands down.
- Caribbean coast, Tortuguero, or the southern Pacific (Manuel Antonio, Osa) → San José (SJO).
- Monteverde cloud forest → either works; Liberia is a slightly shorter drive, San José usually has cheaper flights.
- Arenal / La Fortuna only → either. Both are roughly a three-hour scenic drive; pick on flight price and schedule.
- Seeing several regions → don't pick one. Read the next section.
The trick first-timers miss: fly open-jaw
If your trip crosses the country, the single best thing you can do is fly into one airport and out of the other — an "open-jaw" or "multi-city" ticket. Most airlines price it almost the same as a round-trip, and it means you never double back.

Does the cheaper flight win?
Often the fare difference into San José is real money, and it's tempting to just book it. Before you do, weigh it against the drive on the other end: a cheaper flight into San José can be a false economy if it adds three hours of road to a Guanacaste beach trip — each way. Sometimes the pricier flight into Liberia is the better deal once you count the transfers and the day it gives back.
