The journey

Costa Rica is best understood on foot. This journey crosses seven genuinely different ecosystems: the dry forest and fuming volcanoes of Guanacaste, the Río Celeste, the rainforests of Arenal, the lowland jungle of Sarapiquí, the oak forests and páramo of the Talamanca range at 3,491 m and, at the end, Corcovado. The route follows a natural arc, so you never drive the same road twice, and you return from the Osa Peninsula on a short flight. It runs once, for four travellers at most.

The ecosystems

7 ecosystems, one route.

  1. 01

Tropical dry forest and geothermal zone

Rincón de la Vieja · days 2–3

Fumaroles, mud pots and the shift from humid forest to savanna; the 40 m La Cangreja waterfall over a blue pool.

  2. 02

    Mid-elevation Caribbean-slope forest

    Río Celeste · day 4

Los Teñideros, where two colourless rivers meet and the water turns blue through a volcanic mineral reaction.

  3. 03

    Volcanic premontane rainforest

    Arenal · days 5–7

Primary forest on the volcano's slopes, hidden waterfalls and more than 500 bird species in the area; home to howler, capuchin and spider monkeys.

  4. 04

    Lowland rainforest (Caribbean slope)

    Sarapiquí · days 8–9

La Selva, one of the world's most important tropical research stations: 1,600 hectares and 467 bird species, more than half of the country's.

  5. 05

    Oak cloud forest

San Gerardo de Dota · days 10–11

The best place in the country for the quetzal; June is still breeding season. Moss-covered oak forests.

  6. 06

    Páramo

    Cerro Buena Vista, 3,491 m · day 11

Páramo vegetation above the treeline and birds that live only in the Talamanca heights.

  7. 07

    Pacific primary rainforest

Drake Bay and Corcovado · days 12–13

The Sierpe River mangroves and Sirena Station, in the heart of Corcovado: home to tapirs, all four of the country's monkey species, scarlet macaws and peccaries.

How the guiding works

Our naturalist guide is with you for seven days — the Río Celeste, three days in Arenal (one of them a dawn birding morning) and the Talamanca stretch from Sarapiquí to Sierpe, including the quetzal and páramo day — with binoculars and a spotting scope, and never more than four travellers. The rest is covered by expert naturalists in small groups: a day and a half with La Selva's naturalists, La Cangreja in Rincón de la Vieja, Sirena Station in Corcovado, and a night walk and dawn birding in Drake Bay. These outings are run by local operators and may include other visitors. On your own: the Las Pailas trail and Arenal Volcano National Park, both well marked.

Short on time? The second half of this route runs on its own as Quetzal to Corcovado →

Questions

The things people ask us first.

How fit do I need to be?
Fit enough for several days in a row of 4–6 hours on foot, with altitude up to 3,491 m on the páramo, heat and humidity in the lowlands, and boat rides with beach landings.
Why June?
It's green season: rain tends to come in the afternoon, the forests are at their greenest, the quetzal is still in breeding season and the parks are quieter than in the dry months.
Who else will be in the group?
Never more than four travellers with our guide. Outings run by local operators (La Cangreja, La Selva, Sirena and Drake Bay) may include other visitors.
What about luggage?
Pack light: the domestic flight has a strict weight limit that depends on the fare, and the boats land on the beach.
Can I do it privately?
Yes, on your dates, with our guide throughout. Enquire about a private journey
Can I choose where I stay?
Yes. Every departure runs in all three lodging tiers, and each traveller chooses their own when requesting a place. The price depends on the tier.
What if a park or trail closes?
The programme runs rain or shine and is subject to change for reasons beyond our control, such as weather, rough seas or an official closure. If something can't go ahead, we replace it with an equivalent alternative.
What if I need to cancel?
Within 8 business days of accepting, you can withdraw with a full refund. After that: 91 days or more before the start, we keep 20% of the deposit and you choose between a refund of the rest and credit for a future trip; 90 to 61 days before, we keep 25% of the trip price, the rest of the deposit stays as credit and we refund any balance you've paid; 60 to 31 days before, we keep 50% of the trip price and refund any balance you've paid; 30 days or less, there's no refund, except anything our suppliers refund to us. Credit is valid for a trip starting within 12 months and can be passed to someone else. Refunds are made within 30 days. Your booking contract has the full terms.
Can I change my dates?
Up to 91 days before the start, once and free of charge; from 90 to 61 days before, once, with a change fee; within 60 days, the dates can't change and the cancellation terms apply. New dates depend on availability.
Do I need travel insurance?
It isn't required, but we strongly recommend it, with cover for cancellation and medical care.
